The most exciting comeback victories in Premier League history.
When it comes to sporting drama, very few competitions deliver as consistently as the Premier League does.
Whilst Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have all enjoyed periods of dominance in the Premier League era but as everybody knows, anything can happen when two Premier League sides face off.
Comebacks are par for the course in the Premier League, with the never say die attitude of every side expected to fight to the bitter end by their passionate fans.
Consequently, plenty of sides have come back from down and out positions to pick up famous wins and here is a rundown of some of the best ever seen in the Premier League: 10. Newcastle 4 – 4 Arsenal - 2011
There has only been one 4-goal comeback in Premier League history, with Newcastle coming back from 4-0 down against Arsenal to clinch a famous draw.
A comeback that would undoubtedly be higher on the list if not for the fact that the game ended as a draw, in what is one of the all-time Premier League games.
Goals from Robin van Persie (x2), Johan Djourou and Theo Walcott put the Gunners 4-0 up, but Toon hit back and levelled in just 19 minutes, with Joey Barton (x2), Leon Best and Cheick Tiote completed a memorable comeback for Newcastle United.
9. Leeds United 4 – 3 Derby County - 1997
Leeds United looked dead and buried at home to Derby County in the Autumn of 1997/98 season, finding themselves 3-0 down with just over half an hour played.
Goals from Dean Sturridge (x2) and a Aljosa Asanovic penalty put the Rams three goals ahead at a raucous Elland Road.
However, Leeds pulled themselves back into the contest through goals from Rod Wallace and Harry Kewell before the break before Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink and Lee Bowyer completed the turnaround in the second half.
8. Wolves 4 – 3 Leicester City - 2003
Three goals wasn’t enough for Leicester City either in 2003, as the Foxes took a first half lead at Molineux.
Les Ferdinand bagged a brace, before setting up Riccardo Scimeca to make it 3-0 to Leicester at the break.
However, Wolves had other ideas with Colin Cameron netting twice in quick succession, before the comeback was completed by Alex Rae and Henri Camara.
7. West Ham United 3 – 4 Wimbledon - 1998
It was a similar story at Upton Park for West Ham who looked to have appeased their unruly punters in 1998, going 3-0 up against Wimbledon’s crazy gang.
John Hartson and two goals from Ian Wright put the Hammers in control but Wimbledon never gave up and completed an unlikely comeback through Marcus Gayle (x2), Jason Euell and Efan Ekoku completed the turnaround.
6. Leicester City 5 – 3 Manchester United - 2014
For many years Manchester United were the kings of the comebacks but in 2014, they were on the receiving end of one at Leicester City.
Robin van Persie, Angel di Maria and Angel Herrera put United 3-1 up, with Leandro Ulloa grabbing a goal for Leicester and it was the last 20 minutes in which the game completely changed.
David Nugent, Esteban Cambiasso, Jamie Vardy, and another from Ulloa sealed a famous win for the Foxes.
5. Norwich City 4 – 5 Liverpool - 2016
Liverpool produced a remarkable comeback in early 2016 to get past Norwich City at Carrow Road.
Dieumerci Mbokani, Steven Naismith and Wes Hoolahan had put Liverpool in serious bother, after Roberto Firmino’s opener.
The reds thought the comeback was complete, as Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Firmino again had put them 4-3 up.
Norwich to their credit never gave up and replied in the 92nd minute through Sebastien Bassong, only for Liverpool to go up the other end and win it through Adam Lallana.
4. Bournemouth 4 – 3 Liverpool - 2016
Late drama is another Premier League staple and Bournemouth used it to good effect to overcome Liverpool in 2016.
Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Emre Can had put Liverpool in control, with Callum Wilson’s reply seemingly futile.
However, Ryan Fraser, Steve Cook and Nathan Ake turned the game on its head, sparking wild scenes at the Vitality Stadium.
3. Manchester City 3 – 2 QPR - 2012
Premier League title wins seldom come as dramatic as they did for Manchester City in 2012, as they looked to have blown it against on the last day against Queens Park Rangers.
Pablo Zabaleta had put City 1-0 up, with Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie put QPR ahead, with the clock turning past 90 minutes.
City bagged twice injury time through Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero, to clinch their first ever Premier League title.
2. Manchester City 3 – 2 Aston Villa - 2022
Lightning struck twice for Manchester City, who produced another final day comeback to get past Aston Villa.
Liverpool had the Premier League title in their own hands, as City fell 2-0 down to Villa through goals from Matty Cash and Phillipe Coutinho.
City however never gave up hope and goals from Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan (x2) bagged yet another Premier League title for Pep Guardiola’s blues.
1. Tottenham 3 – 5 Manchester United – 2001
‘It’s only Tottenham lads’ – the fabled half time team talk from Sir Alex Ferguson proved enough to seal an incredible comeback win at White Hart Lane in 2001.
Spurs were good value for their 3-0 half time lead, with Dean Richards, Les Ferdinand and Christian Ziege putting them in full control.
However, United came out with the words of Fergie ringing in their ears and won 5-3 with Andy Cole, Laurent Blanc, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Juan Sebastian Veron and David Beckham grabbing the goals.
