The football world and Liverpool fans in particular are still reeling from the news that Jurgen Klopp is set to leave the club at the end of the season.
It has been a match made in heaven for both Klopp and Liverpool since his arrival in 2015 and he has revolutionised the fortunes of the club, turning them from sleeping giants, to regular Premier League title contenders.
Having enjoyed such success at Anfield, Klopp’s status as an all-time great at Liverpool is unquestioned, with a globally dormant Liverpool fanbase now fully engaged in the fortunes of the club once more.
With Klopp ready to leave Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, here is a countdown of his top 6 moments as Liverpool manager:
6. Alisson’s Header - 2021
Having struggled in the defence of their Premier League title (more on that later), Liverpool looked to be way off pace in the run for the Champions League in Spring of 2021.
However, the never say die attitude instilled by Klopp into his Liverpool team came to the fore, as goalkeeper Alisson came up for a corner, to head the reds into a late lead against West Brom.
With the score locked at 1-1 in injury time, a draw was simply not enough for Liverpool and few managers would have had the audacity to even send their goalkeeper forwards, but Alisson delivered, and Liverpool ended the campaign in 3rd place.
5. Two Domestic Cups - 2022
Whilst there will always be a feeling of what might have been surrounding the 2021/22 campaign for Liverpool, walking away with two domestic trophies was a seriously good return for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Pushing Manchester City all the way in the title race, only for the blues to clinch it in the dying embers of the season was tough to take, as was their Champions League Final defeat to Real Madrid in Paris.
But winning both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup in the same season, triumphing over Chelsea on penalties in both finals, was a monumental effort from Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.
4. Seventh Heaven - 2023
In comparison to some of his other campaigns as Liverpool manager, the 2022/23 season was somewhat of a disappointment but one result will live long in the memory for Liverpool fans.
Going into the game Liverpool were well behind Manchester United in the Premier League table and nobody could have foreseen what happened next.
Liverpool ran riot, with braces from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, and Dawin Nunez, as well as another from Roberto Firmino sealing an incredible 7-0 win at a shell-shocked Anfield.
3. THAT Comeback - 2019
Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool were still awaiting a first major trophy in partnership and whilst the Premier League battle with Manchester City was at its peak in 2018/19, it was in the Champions League that Liverpool finally came good.
As runners-up the year before, Liverpool were one of the sides to beat in the competition in 2019 and when they lost the first leg of their semi-final 3-0 to a Lionel Messi inspired Barcelona at the Nou Camp, they looked to be on the brink of crashing out.
However, something stirred under the Anfield lights, with Liverpool producing one of the most sensational Champions League performances of all time, with braces from Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum ensuring that Liverpool won 4-0 on the night, 4-3 on aggregate, as they booked their place in the 2019 Champions League Final.
2. The Sixth - 2019
No English club comes close to Liverpool when it comes to success in European competition and Jurgen Klopp was tasked with returning the club to former glories when he took the job in 2015.
Having lost out in the 2016 Europa League Final and the 2018 Champions League Final, Klopp’s Liverpool looked to have an increased sense of determination about them in the 2019 Champions League run in.
The aforementioned triumph over Barcelona will always go down in history but for Klopp, getting his hands on the Champions League trophy was a career aspiration and Liverpool comfortably beat Tottenham in the 2019 Champions League Final, winning the 6th European Cup in the club’s rich and fabled history.
1. The Premier League – Finally! - 2020
The Premier League era in England has been dominated by both Manchester clubs yet prior to its inception in 1993, Liverpool had always ruled the roost in English football.
Having won 18 English First Division titles, Liverpool’s dominance had won them an army of fans worldwide, yet the Premier League inception had coincided with a period of relative decline within the club.
With great rivals Manchester United having overtaken their English First Division haul, Liverpool and their fans had long dreamed of breaking their Premier League duck and finally in 2020, Jurgen Klopp was the man to bring the trophy back to Anfield.
Cantering to the title in style, ahead of the all-conquering Manchester City, remains Jurgen Klopp’s greatest achievement, with Liverpool having only managed to win the Premier League once since 1990 and it has etched his place into the folklore of the club for ever more.
