Things are looking rather rosy at Manchester United currently.
Erik ten Hag’s side managed to clinch their first trophy in six seasons, as they overcame Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup, and with Barcelona dispatched in the Europa League too, there is a growing sense of belief that United could be on the cusp of returning to their former glories. Three more trophies do remain in the grasp of the Red Devils this season, with the aforementioned Europa League, the FA Cup at the quarter finals stage, along with the Premier League title race that also involves Arsenal and Manchester City.
However, as is often the case in the weird and wonderful world of football, perhaps one United’s sternest tests this season could come in the form of their old foes Liverpool, with the sides due to meet at Anfield this Sunday.
Liverpool by contrast, are enduring one of their worst seasons in almost a decade. Having won every trophy there is to win in the last 5 years, the reds are on the slide, way off the pace in the Premier League, out of both domestic cups as holders and on the brink against Real Madrid in the Champions League – needing to overturn a 5-2 deficit in the Spanish capital.
Whilst the league positions of each side aren’t likely to change too much from Sundays result, Liverpool vs Manchester United remains one of the flagship fixtures in both English and European football and the stakes are always high when these two great sides clash. Take a look at some of the most memorable moments at Anfield between the two teams.
The Biggest Game in English League Football Incredibly, off the back of their Carabao Cup win last time out, Manchester United have drawn level with Liverpool, with both sides now having won 67 titles each since their respective inceptions back in the 1800’s.
Whilst the merits of each and every trophy can be argued, the fact that Manchester United have won 20 First Division titles and Liverpool have won 19, is a moot point for every fan of both clubs and it is a running battle that has consumed English football for decades.
Until the early 1990’s and the arrival of Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, the debate over English league titles was barely worth having. Liverpool had 18 in the bank – in comparison to the 7 United had, their dominance across the history of the English game was clear for all to see.
However, Fergie revolutionised United in a way that few could have seen possible – winning 13 Premier League titles in a ground breaking 20 year period, to change the face of English football moving forward.
Such is the way with football however, the subsequent decade since Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United in 2013 has been dominated by Manchester City in league terms, with the blues picking up 6 titles. But Liverpool also got involved, clinching the title in 2020, their first English top division triumph in 30 years.
What the immediate and long term futures hold for Liverpool and Manchester United remains to be seen but with both sides eager to pick up points (for both bragging rights and league standing) on Sunday at Anfield, it could be a game that shapes the forthcoming fortunes for both sides.
Can Liverpool stop the rot? Few would have predicted the relative demise of Liverpool this season, with Jurgen Klopp’s side currently 21 points off the pace in the Premier League title race.
Whilst they have only managed to win one league title in recent years, they have been embroiled in some epic battles with Manchester City and many predicted they would be bang in the mix again this term.
However, they now look to be targeting a top 4 finish at best and where better to start than a meeting with old adversaries Manchester United. Liverpool have a game in hand on Tottenham, who sit 6 points above them in 4th place and having pulled off incredible feats before, few would rule out Liverpool from chasing down those sides above them when it matters in their upcoming fixtures.
Who will prevail at Anfield? March 2015 was the last time that Manchester United managed to win at Anfield, suggesting that if Erik ten Hag could find a way for his side to get over the line here, then it could arguably be the biggest result of his Manchester United tenure so far.
For all their relative problems this season, Liverpool have had a very good home record, seeing off champions Manchester City earlier in the season and also dispatching local rivals Everton with disdain at home at Anfield last month.
The momentum heading into this one is undeniable with Manchester United and if they can get over the line here, they must be starting to be believe that they can add to their trophy haul this season.
But how Liverpool would love to stop them.
