Match Day 9 – October 8th – 10th 2022

Arsenal made arguably their biggest statement of the season so far on match day 9 with a pulsating home win over Liverpool, whilst Manchester City and Tottenham kept pace at the top of the table.
Chelsea continued their good start to life under Graham Potter, with Manchester United also getting back to winning ways. Newcastle continued their excellent recent form, whilst Bournemouth continue to climb away from trouble under caretaker manager Gary O’Neill.

Here is a rundown of this weekend’s Premier League action:

Newcastle United 5 – 1 Brentford

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle went into the game unbeaten at home since April and they looked in fine fettle once more, as they overcame Brentford at St James’s Park. Bruno Guimaraes and Jacob Murphy put the Magpies 2-0 up with former Toon striker Ivan Toney replying from the penalty spot. That only kicked Newcastle into action once more as Guimaraes, Miguel Almiron and an Ethan Pinnock own goal sealed a big win for Newcastle.

Manchester City 4 – 0 Southampton

Manchester City’s superb run continued, with a resounding home win over a struggling Southampton side. City looked strong from the off and led 2-0 at half time thanks to goals from Joao Canelo and Phil Foden. Riyad Mahrez and Erling Haaland then scored in the second half, as City moved, albeit briefly, to the top of the Premier League table.

Chelsea 3 – 0 Wolves

Diego Costa’s return to Chelsea proved to be an unhappy one, as his new Wolves side were well beaten by Graham Potter’s blues. Chelsea huffed and puffed for much of the first half but eventually took the lead on the stroke of half time thanks to Kai Havertz. Christian Pulisic then made it 2-0 around the hour mark before Armando Broja’s first goal for Chelsea sealed a big win late on.

Bournemouth 2 – 1 Leicester City

Leicester City’s struggles continue as they let an early lead slip away at Bournemouth. The Foxes were in full control at half time, after Patson Daka had them up 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium. Bournemouth never gave up though and two quick fire strikes from Phillip Billing and Ryan Christie turned the game on its head, giving the Cherries a potentially vital three points.

Brighton 0 – 1 Tottenham

Tottenham were forced to dig deep to get back to winning ways in the Premier League, and overcome Brighton at the AMEX Stadium. Harry Kane struck in the first half to give Spurs the lead. The second half was a much cagier affair, with neither side creating too many clear cut chances and Tottenham picked up a gritty win.

West Ham United 3 – 1 Fulham

West Ham United came from behind to overcome Fulham at the London Olympic Stadium. The visitors started brightly and took the lead inside 6 minutes thanks to a cracking opener by Andreas Pereira. West Ham gradually came back into it though and levelled through Jarrod Bowen’s penalty, before Gianluca Scamacca’s chip put them in control and Michail Antonio sealed the win for David Moyes’s side in injury time.

Crystal Palace 2 – 1 Leeds United

Crystal Palace completed a comeback at Selhurst Park to overcome Leeds United. Pascal Struijk struck inside 10 minutes for Leeds, who started very brightly in East London. Palace worked their way back into the contest steadily though and Odsonne Edouard’s header pulled them level. A smart finish from Eberechi Eze midway through the second half proved to be enough to give Palace all three points, as they look to continue to climb the table.

Arsenal 3 – 2 Liverpool

Arsenal picked up a real statement victory over Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium. Gabriel Martinelli gave the Gunners an early lead before Darwin Nunez hit back for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Bukayo Saka put Arsenal in front once more before half time, with Roberto Firmino responding soon after to level things up once more for Liverpool. The impressive Saka then scored the game’s decisive goal, from the penalty spot, to send Arsenal back to the top of the table.

Everton 1 – 2 Manchester United

Manchester United got back to winning ways in the Premier League, with a hard-fought win on the road at Everton. The Toffees started well and took the lead through Alex Iwobi’s thunderbolt before Antony replied for United. Cristiano Ronaldo came off the bench for the Red Devils to net his 700th career goal and secure an important win for Erik ten Hag’s side at Goodison Park.

Nottingham Forest 1 – 1 Aston Villa

Nottingham Forest moved off the bottom of the Premier League table, with a hard fought point at home to Aston Villa. The hosts took the lead, as Emmanuel Dennis notched his first goal for the club, before Ashley Young hit back for Villa with a stunning 25-yard strike. Neither side could kick on from there and the points were shared at the City Ground.

Looking ahead….

The Premier League fixtures are hotting up once more, with the World Cup hiatus on the horizon next month, matchday 10 looks to be another memorable one. Manchester City's trip to Liverpool is the headline act of a full fixture list, with Manchester United hosting Newcastle and table-topping Arsenal travelling to Leeds. Chelsea have an awkward looking trip to Aston Villa, whilst Tottenham and Everton do battle in North London.
Down at the foot of the table, Nottingham Forest and Wolves will be scrapping it out, as both sides look to climb away from relegation trouble.
