The 2024 FA Cup promises to be a fascinating race to the wire, with 6 teams from the top half of the Premier League now having booked their places in the last 8. Holders Manchester City showed their teeth once again to overcome Luton Town in emphatic fashion, whilst Manchester United left it late to edge past Nottingham Forest. Elsewhere, the dream came to an end for non-league giant killers Maidstone United, as Coventry City dispatched of them and Jurgen Klopp’s side continued to produce the goods, with Liverpool beating Championship side Southampton at Anfield.
With the draw for the last 8 confirmed too, it promises to be another fascinating round of FA Cup fixtures in mid-March, with a Wembley semi-final on the line.
Coventry City 5 – 0 Maidstone United The run enjoyed by Maidstone United in the 2023/24 FA Cup was nothing short of sensational, with George Elokobi’s National League South side defying the odds to reach the last 16. Wins over the likes of Ipswich Town and Stevenage Borough enabled Maidstone to break new ground in the competition but they found Coventry City an all too big task. An Ellis Simms hattrick and a late brace from Fabio Tavares sealed an impressive win for City, who are now the lowest ranked side left in the competition.
Bournemouth 0 – 1 (AET) Leicester City On paper, the biggest upset of the round took place at the Vitality Stadium, as Championship leaders Leicester City dug deep to overcome Bournemouth and book their place in the last 8. The 2021 FA Cup winners rode their luck at times against the Premier League quality of Bournemouth, but they stayed in the game and took their chance. Abdul Fatawu’s extra time goal proved enough for the Foxes, and they will be looking to crash the Premier League party in the next round.
Blackburn Rovers 1 (3) – (4) 1 Newcastle United Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United travelled to Blackburn Rovers in need of a serious confidence boost and they needed a penalty shootout to edge past the Championship outfit. Anthony Gordon gave the Magpies a second half lead, before Sammie Szmodics replied for Rovers to force extra time and then penalties. Martin Dubravka was the hero for Newcastle, saving two penalties to send Toon through to the last 8.
Luton Town 2 – 6 Manchester City Following a slow couple of performances, Manchester City bounced back with venom, as they thumped Luton Town in what felt like a statement win. City went 3-0 to the good through an Erling Haaland hattrick before two excellent Jordan Clark strikes pulled Luton within one goal. However, Haaland bagged two more, with Mateo Kovacic also getting in on the act, as City look to clinch back-to-back FA Cup titles.
Chelsea 3 – 2 Leeds United Chelsea bounced back from their Carabao Cup disappointment, with a hard fought home win over Championship high-flyers Leeds United at Stamford Bridge. Mateo Joseph put Leeds in front early on before goals from Nicholas Jackson and Mykhailo Mudryk put Chelsea in front before half time. Joseph bagged again to level things up, but Conor Gallagher struck in the dying embers to secure an important win for Chelsea, as they seek something meaningful to play for this season.
Wolves 1 – 0 Brighton Two teams locked in the Premier League mid-table battle went at it at Molyneux and it was the home side that booked their place in the last 8. In an entertaining affair, both sides created plenty of chances, but Brighton were made to rue theirs, as Mario Lemina’s goal – inside 2 minutes – proved to be the difference between the teams and Wolves are in mix in the quarter finals.
Nottingham Forest 0 – 1 Manchester United Having suffered a damp squib of a result at home against Fulham last time out, Manchester United needed to respond and that they did against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. With the game seemingly meandering towards extra time, United held their nerve, with Casemiro heading home to seal United’s passage to the last 8 of the FA Cup for the second season in a row.
Liverpool 3– 0 Southampton Liverpool’s quest for all 4 trophies available to them this season continued, as Jurgen Klopp’s youthful side found a way to overcome Championship giants Southampton. Debutant Louis Koumas opened the scoring for the reds, before Jayden Danns bagged a brace, to seal a superb win for the reds, who continue their charge towards another trophy laden season.
It is crunch time in the 2024 FA Cup and with some huge quarter final ties in prospect, it should be a fascinating battle to see who will come out on top at Wembley at the end of the season.
