English Premier League Review Match Day 8 – October 1st – 3rd 2022
Home supremacy reigned supreme in both the Manchester and North London Derbies this weekend, as Arsenal and Manchester City cruised to victories over their closest rivals, Tottenham and Manchester United respectively. Elsewhere, Chelsea got off the mark under Graham Potter, Liverpool’s relative struggles continued at home to Brighton, whilst Wolves became the latest Premier League side to part ways with their manager, as Bruno Lage was shown the door.
Here is a rundown of this weekend’s Premier League action:
In what was billed as the biggest North London derby in years, Arsenal, were ultimately too much for local rivals Spurs. Arsenal ran the show from the outset. Thomas Partey opened the scoring, with Harry Kane netting his customary reply from the penalty spot. The Gunners stepped it up in the second half, with Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka both scoring, to secure an important win for Mikel Arteta and his team.
Bournemouth continued their decent form under caretaker boss Gary O’Neill, with a hard fought draw at home to Brentford. Both sides were far from their best at the Vitality Stadium and at times it was an attritional watch but both sides had to ultimately settle for a hard earned point.
Graham Potter’s first Premier League game in charge of Chelsea ended in victory, as the blues came from behind to win at Crystal Palace. Odsonne Edouard opened the scoring for Palace, who troubled Chelsea for long periods, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang notched his first Chelsea goal in response. With the game heading for a draw, former Palace loanee Conor Gallagher silenced the home crowd with a stunning strike, to win the game for the visitors.
Newcastle continued their excellent form under Eddie Howe, with a good win on the road at Fulham. Nathaniel Chalobah was sent off for Fulham inside 10 minutes and Newcastle made them pay instantly, with Callum Wilson netting for the toon. A Miguel Almiron brace and a Sean Longstaff strike brought Newcastle up to 4, with Fulham salvaging an 88th minute goal through Bobby Decordova Reid’s late consolation strike.
Liverpool and Brighton played out a Premier League classic, which ended 3-3 at Anfield. Leandro Trossard netted an early double for Brighton, who were the better side in the initial exchanges. Liverpool dug deep as ever and turned the game on its head with two goals from Roberto Firmino and an Adam Webster own goal. But Brighton weren’t done, and they grabbed a deserved point late on as Trossard completed his hat trick.
Frank Lampard’s Everton recorded back to back wins for the first time this season, as they came from behind to beat Southampton. The game sprung into life in the second half, as Joe Aribo opened the scoring for the Saints, only for Conor Coady to instantly reply for Everton. Dwight McNeill then won the game for Everton, who climb out of the bottom three as a result and they will be looking to build on this result moving forwards.
West Ham returned to winning ways at the London Olympic Stadium, in what proved to be Bruno Lage’s final game as Wolves manager. The Hammers dominated throughout and took the lead through Gianluca Scamacca’s first league goal for the club, with Jarred Bowen making it 2-0 after half time. The result leaves Wolves in the bottom three and with only one win under their belt this term, West Ham meanwhile climb to 15th.
Manchester City ran riot in the 188th league Manchester Derby, as they thrashed Manchester United 6-3. City were in full control at half time and found themselves 4-0 up, with both Phil Foden and Erling Haaland netting twice. Antony replied for United with a stunning strike but both Foden and Haaland completed their hat tricks on a chastening day for the reds. Anthony Martial replied for United with two late goals but the damage was already done.
Leeds United and Aston Villa shared the points in a fiery encounter at Elland Road. The home side started on the front foot, despite having manager Jesse Marsch in the stands but they couldn’t find a way past a resolute Villa defence. Luis Sinisterra was sent off for Leeds early in the second half and although Villa hit the post through Philippe Coutinho, they couldn’t break the deadlock and the points were ultimately shared.
Leicester City picked up their first Premier League win of the season, as they overcame East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest in emphatic fashion. The Foxes were on it from the outset and found themselves 3-0 up at half time thanks to a James Maddison brace and another from Harvey Barnes. Patson Daka completed the rout for Leicester in the second half, who move off the bottom of the table as a result. Looking ahead…. Premier League matchday 9 promises to be another cracker, with table topping Arsenal arguably facing their toughest test of the season at home to Liverpool. Manchester City will be looking to continue their blistering form as they welcome Southampton, whilst Tottenham and Chelsea will be hoping to keep pace against Brighton and Wolves respectively. Manchester United need to respond to their Derby Day drubbing as they take on Everton, whilst Leicester City will be looking to build on their first win of the campaign last time out, as they travel to Bournemouth.
