The FA Cup delivered in a big way once more, with the usual mix of giant killings and big sides progressing to round 5. Manchester City came out on top in a game between the Premier League’s top two, as they overcame Arsenal, whilst Manchester United and Tottenham both progressed against Championship level opposition. Holders Liverpool were sent crashing out of the competition by Brighton, whilst non-league Wrexham almost pulled off a shock win against Championship high flyers Sheffield United.
Here is a rundown of some selected FA Cup 4th Round results:
Premier League champions Manchester City managed to overcome current league leaders Arsenal in an entertaining cup tie at the Etihad Stadium on Friday evening. Both sides created plenty of chances in an open encounter. But it was Nathan Ake who stroked home, following good effort from Jack Grealish, to seal the win for City and book their place in the last 16. Leaving Arsenal to now focus on chasing their first league title in two decades.
League Two minnows Walsall gave a superb account of themselves against 2021 FA Cup winners Leicester City but ultimately came up short against the Premier League outfit. Youri Tielemans missed a penalty early in the second half for Leicester but they found a winner through Kelechi Iheanacho and the Foxes progress to round five.
Leeds United put their Premier League troubles behind them, as they overcame Accrington Stanley to reach the last 16 of the FA Cup. Goals from Jack Harrison, Junior Firpo and Luis Sinisterra were enough to put the whites in full control before Leslie Adekoya’s consolation gave Accrington and their fans something to shout about in the dying embers.
Tottenham got back to winning ways in the FA Cup, with a big win on the road at Championship side Preston North End. Nobody could find a way through in a cagey first half before a high quality double from Son Heung-min put Spurs in control and a debut goal for Arnaut Danjuma was the icing on the cake for Antonio Conte’s men.
Manchester United pursuit of their first trophy in 5 years continued as they overcame Championship side Reading. The visitors frustrated United for long periods at Old Trafford, but the deadlock was eventually broken by Casemiro who netted twice before the hour mark, before Fred made it 3-0 after Andy Carroll was sent off. Amadou Salif Mbengue pulled a goal back for Reading but United progressed comfortably.
Defending FA Cup champions crashed out in dramatic fashion as Brighton came from behind to pile the pressure on Jurgen Klopp and his side. Harvey Elliott stroked home to give Liverpool a deserved lead but the hosts hit back as Lewis Dunk deflected home from Tariq Lamptey’s strike. With the game meandering towards a draw, Kauro Mitoma produced a moment of brilliance to smash home to give Brighton a famous win, sparking wild scenes at the AMEX Stadium.
Wrexham 3 – 3 Sheffield United Non-league side Wrexham produced a superb performance in front of co-Chairman Ryan Reynolds, but they couldn’t quite get the Hollywood script their performance deserved. Oli McBurnie gave Sheffield United the lead inside a minute at the Racecourse Ground before James Jones replied for Wrexham early in the second half. The momentum was with the reds as Tom O’Connor smashed home to put Wrexham in front before Oliver Norwood replied for the Blades. Daniel Jebbison was sent off for Sheffield United before Paul Mullin thought he had won it for Wrexham. However, there was a final twist, as John Egan stabbed home from a late corner to earn Sheffield United a replay at Bramall Lane next week. Looking ahead…. There are still 6 fixtures to be decided before the 5th round proper can get underway, with replays needing to be played in the next couple of weeks. Sheffield United vs Wrexham will inevitably be the headline match-up once more, with Grimsby Town vs Luton Town another tasty looking tie. Birmingham and Blackburn Rovers will meet again in an all-Championship tie, whilst Fulham will travel to Sunderland, Burnley will welcome Ipswich Town and Fleetwood take on fellow League One side Sheffield Wednesday for a place in the last 16.
